Important information regarding storm damage from Oct. 6, 2021; deadlines looming!
Alabama Law requires filing a damage claim against a municipality within six months of property damage.
If the claim is not filed, the individual is barred from filing a lawsuit against the municipality.
So, if you have property damage from the October 6, 2021 storm, the deadline to file a claim is April 1, 2022. You may have as long as April 6.
You do not need a lawyer to file a claim.
This claim is different from filing with FEMA or talking to the engineers who visited properties after the storm.
If you feel the city is responsible for some or all of the damage to your property, you should file a claim. It is easy, inexpensive and keeps your options open for future action against the city.
For your convenience a form is provided with filing information. Select the appropriate form (Jefferson or Shelby County).
